Echoes of 1916 is a collection of seven hand-drawn portraits of the seven signatories of the Irish Proclamation. The artwork is accompanied by soft background music composed and recorded by the artist, creating an immersive tribute to the men who shaped Ireland’s revolutionary history.
The Proclamation of the Irish Republic was issued by the Irish Republican Brotherhood and Irish Citizen Army on Easter Monday, April 24, 1916, during the Easter Rising, marking the formal declaration of an independent Irish state from Britain. Authored primarily by Patrick Pearse and printed in haste at Liberty Hall, the document asserted Irish sovereignty and established a Provisional Government to administer the new republic. Though the Easter Rising was suppressed by British forces, the Proclamation, read by Pearse from outside the General Post Office, became a foundational document for modern Irish nationhood and ultimately galvanised support for independence. The Proclamation became a central symbol and foundational document of modern Irish nationhood. Although the Easter Rising was short-lived and initially unpopular, the subsequent executions of the rebel leaders and the execution of the signatories increased public support for Irish independence, leading to the War of Independence.
This exhibition is kindly supported by Roscommon County Council, The Irish Heritage Trust, Culture Night Ireland, Arts Council of Ireland and of course the beautiful Strokestown House and all of their staff and volunteers.
